State Parks and Forrests
The Red Clay Historic State Park covers over 250 acres of forested ridges and narrow valleys. Once used as cotton and pasture land and now popular with hikers and picnic lovers alike. The park contains a large picnic pavilion complete with grills and washrooms. A popular tourist attraction is the Blue Hole Spring, a deep clear water supply that was once used by the Cherokee during council meetings. Red Clay served as the council seat for the Cherokee Government from 1832, until their removal in 1833. It now marks the beginning of the historic "Trail of Tears" when the Cherokee learned of the loss of their land.

The Cherokee National Forest lies in the heart of the Southern Appalachians mountain range and is the largest area of public land in Tennessee. With over 20,000 plants and animals housed within the forest, The United States Department of Agriculture Forest Services strive to preserve the resources and tranquility of the land. A beautiful and popular destination for tourists and locals to hike the various trails, hunt, fish and camp in one the many developed campsites. Many nature lovers choose to take the path less traveled and pick out their own piece of land to call their own for a few days.
River Rafting Adventures
The Ocoee Whitewater Center located in the Cherokee National Forest offers countless opportunities for outdoor adventure! The dam controlled river is the most popular in the area as it has swift moving rapids that guarantee adventure. Kayak or raft down the same tract that was used during the 1996 Olympics kayaking events. The Tanasi Trail system, part of the Ocoee Center offers 15 hiking and biking trails for everyone from the leisure rider to the hard core trail rider.
With a 23 mile section declared a class 3 river containing rapids with high waves, the Hiwassee River is a favorite for true white water rafting daredevils. There are numerous public access boat launch sites along the way and plentiful opportunities for rafting, canoeing, camping, fishing and hiking within the park. The deep valleys and winding rivers make Cleveland and the surrounding areas a favorite target for raft and kayak adventurers. Fishing has always been a favorite past time of people in these parts and there is no lack of options in Bradley County. You can catch a variety of fish in local lakes and rivers including crappie, bluegill, white bass, catfish, yellow bass, yellow perch and pickerel. Fishing is excellent year-round, with spring and summer the most popular, but more fishermen are finding that fishing can be good in the cooler months as well.
